In direct development, the animals born are similar to their parents, only they are small and must go through a stage of growth and puberty. Direct development is characteristic of some invertebrates, reptiles, birds and mammals. With indirect development, the body goes through an intermediate stage of the larva, which will become an adult only after certain changes (undergoing metamorphosis) through complete or incomplete transformation (amphibians, fish and many invertebrates).
