| Calculate the amount of substance and the mass of alkali, which was obtained by the interaction of 620 g of sodium oxide and water.
The reaction of sodium oxide and water is described by the following chemical equation:
Na2O + H2O = 2NaOH;
From one mole of sodium oxide, two moles of sodium hydroxide are formed.
Let’s determine the amount of substance in 620 grams of sodium oxide.
Its molar mass is:
M Na2O = 23 x 2 + 16 = 62 grams / mol.
The amount of the substance will be:
N Na2O = 620/62 = 10 mol.
From this amount, 20 moles of alkali can be obtained.
Let’s define its mass:
Its molar mass is:
M NaOH = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40 grams / mol.
The mass will be:
m NaOH = 20 x 40 = 800 grams.
