Copper (ii) chloride and sodium hydroxide form an ionic and molecular equation.

The reaction takes place in two stages. Stage 1:

CuCl2 + 2NaOH = Cu (OH) 2 + 2NaCl

Cu2 + + 2OH- + 2Cl- + 2Na + = Cu (OH) 2 + 2Cl- + 2Na +

Cu2 + + 2OH- = Cu (OH) 2

Stage 2 (occurs only with an excess of alkali):

Cu (OH) 2 + 2NaOH = Na2 [Cu (OH) 4]

Cu (OH) 2 + 2OH- + 2Na + = 2Na + + [Cu (OH) 4] 2-

Cu (OH) 2 + 2OH- = [Cu (OH) 4] 2-
