| Determine the volume of hydrogen that will be obtained if 20.0 g of zinc is added to a dilute sulfuric acid solution containing 16 g of H2SO4.
To obtain zinc sulfate, zinc must be placed in sulfuric acid.
Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2;
Zinc reacts with sulfuric acid in equal proportions. This produces the same amount of hydrogen.
Let’s determine the chemical amount of zinc.
M Zn = 65 grams / mol;
N Zn = 20/65 = 0.307 mol;
Let’s find the molar amount of sulfuric acid.
M H2SO4 = 2 + 32 + 16 x 4 = 98 grams / mol;
N H2SO4 = 16/98 = 0.163 mol;
With this amount of zinc and acid, it is possible to obtain 0.163 mol of hydrogen.
Let’s calculate the volume of 0.163 mol of hydrogen.
V H2 = 22.4 x 0.163 = 3.651 liters;
