The law of conservation of mass of substances states that mass is not created or destroyed in the course of a chemical reaction. The law states that the total masses of products from a chemical reaction are exactly equal to the characteristics of the reagents.

The law requires that during any nuclear reaction, radioactive decay, or chemical reaction in an isolated system, the total mass of the reactants or starting materials is equal to the mass of the products.
