Matrix processes in a cell, as the name suggests, occur on a matrix. Examples of the most important matrix processes for the cell are RNA synthesis on a DNA matrix (transcription), protein synthesis on an RNA matrix (translation), DNA synthesis on a DNA matrix (replication). Common to these processes is that the synthesis of a new molecule occurs in accordance with the information recorded on the template molecule in the form of a sequence of nucleotides. The information according to which RNA is synthesized from DNA is called the genetic code.
