How did Switzerland come about?

The history of Switzerland begins with the emergence of medieval defensive leagues, formed in its part, devoid of imperial power.

The various cantons were largely independent states that remained united through the joint defense of freedom, which was understood as the defense of imperial privileges.

Unlike all such confederations, and despite internal strife, the Swiss Confederation survived the formation of modern states without adapting to them.
