How was the phalanx of the Macedonians different from the Greek?

The Greek phalanx had a formation of 9 people in depth. It mainly consisted of heavy hoplites, who were armed with a wide round shield – a hoplon, as well as a spear of 2.5 m. At the same time, Philip II of Macedon improved the phalanx formation. Now the depth of the formation could reach 16 people. In addition, the armament of the phalangits has changed. Now they were armed with a small round shield, but with a long 6 meter spear – a sarissa.
