It is believed that the moon was once surrounded by an atmosphere, but gradually lost it. How can this be explained?

The absence of an atmosphere on the Moon is due to two reasons:
1) Small force of gravity (on the Moon it is 6 times less than on Earth);
2) No magnetic field. The planet’s magnetic field protects its surface from the solar wind (a stream of matter particles flying from the Sun).
