Obtaining ammonia in laboratory conditions.

To obtain ammonia, the method of moderate heating of a mixture of ammonium chloride with slaked lime is widely used.

2NН4Cl + Ca (OH) 2 = CaCl2 + 2NH3 + 2H2О.

To further dry the ammonia, it is passed through a mixture of lime and sodium hydroxide.

Another laboratory method is the action of strong alkalis on ammonium salts:

NH4Cl + NaOH = NH3 + NaCl + H2O.
