One side of the rectangle is 2 cm longer than the other. The total length of these two sides

One side of the rectangle is 2 cm longer than the other. The total length of these two sides is 12 cm. Find the length of each side of this rectangle.

Let’s denote the length of the shorter side of this rectangle through x.
According to the condition of the problem, the large side of the rectangle is 2 cm longer than the smaller side of this rectangle, therefore, the large side of the rectangle is x + 2.
It is also known that the total length of two sides of a given rectangle is 12 cm, therefore, we can draw up the following equation:
x + x + 2 = 12.
We solve the resulting equation:
2 * x + 2 = 12;
2 * (x + 1) = 12;
x + 1 = 12/2;
x + 1 = 6;
x = 6 – 1;
x = 5 cm.
Knowing the length of the smaller side of this rectangle, we find the larger side of the rectangle:
x + 2 = 5 + 2 = 7 cm.

Answer: the lengths of the sides of this rectangle are 5 cm and 7 cm.
