Sucrose is poured into a test tube, the test tube is connected to a container that contains calcined water. The sucrose is burned; since it is an organic substance, it will burn to form water and carbon dioxide. The gas from the test tube enters the vessel with calcined water, and we can observe the formation of turbidity in the water. Calcined water becomes cloudy when exposed to carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide contains carbon in its composition. This is a qualitative response to carbon dioxide.
