Study of the structure of the flower of the onion plant. Take a close look at the onion inflorescence. What is it called? Try to separate one small flower from the inflorescence. Is there a cup? How many leaves? What colour ? How many stamens and pistils?
Peduncles of all onion plants are called an arrow – it is a tube with thin walls, hollow inside, which has a slight thickening at the base (for strength). The length of such an arrow can be from 45 to 130 cm. At the top of the arrows, the umbrella inflorescence itself is formed. It can be collected from a few pieces to several thousand small flowers. The color of onion flowers can be very different – white, blue, yellowish, purple. The onion flower blooms for only 3-7 days, and the flowering of the entire umbrella takes from 7 to 35 days. Onion flowers are symmetrical and have no sepals – each flower has six leaves, but no calyx. One flower has 6 stamens and 1 pistil.
