The discovery of continents and oceans is a thing of the past. Describe the role of space technologies in the development of geography?
Even before the deployment of the first space programs and, even more so, the first satellite images, mankind had detailed accurate maps of Europe, Asia and North America. But the territories of South America, Africa, Australia and Antarctica were mapped with significant errors and inaccuracies. Interestingly, recently a group of Russian schoolchildren, using satellite photographs, found a new island near Novaya Zemlya, a glacier retreated from it and was not yet on the map. In addition to all this, such images from spacecraft allow us to study the melting of glaciers, the scale of natural disasters, and even the movement of lithospheric plates.
