The length of one segment is 18 cm, and the length of the second segment is 2/3 of the length of the first. Find the length of the second segment.
The length of the first segment is 3/3. The length of the second is 2/3. The second segment is less than the first by:
3/3 – 2/3 = 1/3.
The fraction 2/3 tells us that the length of the first segment was divided into three equal parts and two such parts were taken.
Therefore, in order to find out the length of the second segment, we need to divide the length of the first into three parts and multiply one such part by two:
18 cm / 3 pieces * 2 pieces = 12 cm.
Bottom line: the second segment is twelve centimeters long.
