In ancient Sparta, the inhabitants were engaged in: agriculture, cattle breeding, trade, craft, etc. Basically all the work was done by helot slaves. The Spartans themselves hardly did the work as such. Interestingly, the population of the helots was several times higher than the population of the Spartans, but the helots were still slaves. They often raised uprisings that the Spartans suppressed.
