What did the peasants do and how did they live in the Middle Ages?

The peasants at the early stage of the Middle Ages still retained their independence. But soon the feudal oppression intensified and most of them fell under the rule of the landowners. In the landed estates, they were engaged in the same business as before enslavement, only with less enthusiasm. Their main activities were: animal husbandry, agriculture, hunting, fishing, handicraft. In their free time, they worked on their allotments. The peasants were illiterate and semi-literate, but they preserved the culture and traditions of their ancestors.
