What does the root system hold?

The main function of the root system is to support the plant; search, absorption and transportation of water and ions from the soil; transportation and storage of products of photosynthesis.

Each root can be arbitrarily divided into several zones, each of which has different functions: the apical zone of cell division is the source of all cells in the root; cell elongation zone; zone of cell differentiation; cell maturation zone.

The root system grows at the expense of the primary root to obtain one or more orders of lateral roots. Root hairs are epidermal vessels that are functional in absorbing water and ions and are entry points for nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
