What ideals were most appreciated by the inhabitants of the Greek city-states and why?

The Greek polis had a democratic form of government. The main ideal was a free person with an active civil position. A citizen had to take an active part in the life of the state, participate in elections and meetings. Also, the state protected animals, since they were sacred. For killing an animal, a large fine was imposed on a citizen. The citizen valued calmness, balanced decisions, not emotionality. Man is the embodiment of God, and God is immortal man.
