What is the essence of mitosis and what is its biological significance?

Mitosis is the process of cell division. This method of division is typical for most eukaryotic cells. The peculiarity of mitosis is that all chromosomes inside the nucleus are distributed evenly into daughter nuclei. Accordingly, the two new cells are identical, since their nuclei are identical. Because of this, mitosis is characteristic of eukaryotes, since prokaryotes do not have a nucleus and they cannot divide in this way either. Due to mitosis, the growth of the organism is possible, since the cells are actively dividing and the volume of tissues increases.
