The pleura is a connective tissue membrane that covers the lungs and consists of two layers: visceral and parietal. There is a space between these layers – the pleural cavity, which is filled with serous fluid, which reduces friction between the layers during breathing. The main function of the pleura is to protect the delicate surface of the lungs from injury during breathing, as well as to provide additional space for inhalation. Also, a certain pressure is maintained inside the pleural cavity, which allows the lungs to expand freely during inhalation.
