What is the peculiarity of the ladder order of inheritance of the supreme power? Why does such an order often lead to civil strife?

In Russia, there was a ladder system for the transfer of power, according to which power was transferred not to the son of the ruler, but to his brother, the next in seniority in the generation of Rurikovich, and if all the prince’s brothers had already died, then to the eldest son, and at his death – to his other brothers, even if his sons were already aged.

This system did not cause confusion, since power passed in turn. Moreover, if the reigning younger brother died, then power passed not to his son, but to the first son of the older brother of the previous generation.

This order of transition to reign most often led to civil strife, since not all heirs wanted to wait for their turn and almost all the heirs of the Rurikovichs had their own lands, and they had the opportunity to lead the warriors.
