What is the phenomenon of diffusion? What does it indicate? How does the rate of diffusion depend on temperature; density? Why?

Diffusion is the interpenetration of particles of one substance – molecules – between particles of another, i.e. mixing. This physical process can take place in liquids and gases, i.e. where there is free movement of molecules, and indicates the molecular structure of substances. The diffusion rate increases with increasing temperature and decreases with increasing density of the substance, because the free path of its molecules decreases. In solids, diffusion is impossible, because there is no free movement of molecules (crystal lattice).
