What is the significance of the palatine tonsils and what happens with their disease – tonsillitis?

The palatine tonsils are located between the soft palate and tongue. Contain an accumulation of lymphoid tissue. They perform a protective function, participate in the development of immunity. In the tonsils there are deepened pits – lacunae. These paired formations fight the infection, trying not to let it enter the respiratory tract.

With frequent diseases, the tonsils do not cope with their function. A person gets sick with tonsillitis. This lowers immunity. In the chronic form, most often they become useless and are removed.
