Chemotrophs are organisms that are able to receive energy as a result of redox processes (chemosynthesis). The substances needed by chemotrophs to create energy can be inorganic (such as ammonia or hydrogen sulfide) and organic (the most common are proteins, fats, and carbohydrates). Chemotrophs generally include bacteria and other microorganisms.
