What was one of the reasons for the retreat of the French army from Moscow in the fall of 1812?

On August 26, 1812, the Battle of Borodino took place. After that, the Russian troops were forced to retreat for rearmament. The Tarutino maneuver was completed and the prepared army returned to defeat the French. Napoleon with his army was at that time in Moscow. He was waiting for the solemn surrender of the city. However, he found only a burning city ravaged by the inhabitants themselves. Napoleon’s troops were forced to retreat in the fall along the Smolensk road that they had plundered, since the battle at Maloyaroslavets left them no choice. Food and human reserves decreased – it was no longer possible to resist.
