What was the purpose of the great northern expedition?

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Russian Empire actively pursued the development of new lands in the east and north of the country. The initiator of this expedition was the Dane Bering Vitus. He was also the general leader of the Northern Expedition. Five groups of ships were sent on the voyage, three of which were to explore the shores of the Arctic Ocean, one team was looking for a way to Japan, and Bering himself was exploring Kamchatka and routes to North America.
