When a mixture of sand and coke is heated in an electric furnace to 2000 degrees, a compound is obtained containing about 70% silicon and 30% carbon. Write the equation for this reaction, taking into account that one of the reaction products is carbon monoxide (2).

Obviously, there are no other elements in this compound besides silicon and carbon. From the school curriculum, we know only two compounds of silicon with carbon – these are SiO2 and SiO. By definition of a chemical reaction, its participants change in the course of the reaction, that is, this substance is not SiO2. Let’s check SiO: 28:12 = 70:30, the ratio of the masses of the elements converges. The following reaction is obtained: SiO2 + C = SiO + CO. The course of this reaction is not contradicted by chemical laws.
