When and how did the English possessions originate in France?

In May 1152, Alienora, Duchess of Aquitaine, married the Duke of Normandy, who later became King of England, Henry II Plantagenet. In inheritance from her father, Alienor received the Duchy of Aquitaine (Guienne), located in the south-west of France. After the accession of Alienora’s husband to the throne (in 1154), these lands automatically passed under the protectorate of the English crown.
