Where did medieval cities originate?

Medieval cities grew up on the ruins of the cities of the Roman Empire, or these cities continued to exist. In the early Middle Ages, the cities decreased, only the center was surrounded by fortress walls.

Cities were located on trade routes or at their intersections, which influenced the growth and wealth of the city. These paths could pass both by land and by sea (or rivers).

The cities were also located near the mineral mines, where the resulting raw materials were processed.

Cities could also arise near castles, which were the administrative centers of the regions.
