Why did people start creating maps?

Since the days of the Great Discoveries, a huge need arose to systematize information about new lands, for orientation on the ground – the size of the territory, land or sea route, features of the relief, etc. For this, ancient travelers created maps. Maps contain a lot of information, which is indicated using conventional symbols, and since all symbols simply do not fit on a map of a convenient size, they were divided into several types:

* physical – to describe the terrain;

* political – to describe countries;

* automobile – with roads, cities, small settlements;

* sea – for shipping;

* tourist – with roads, sights.

There are even maps of the ocean floor. All maps should reflect information about location, distance, etc. as accurately as possible.
