Why is oil better than coal? Why is it used to obtain fuel for internal combustion engines?

Oil has several major competitive advantages over coal. First, it is more transportable. It is distilled through pipes and sometimes even by gravity, it fills the entire volume of containers, it does not need to be overloaded with a shovel. It would be hard to throw pieces of coal into the car engine while driving. And gasoline vapors rise by themselves. Also, oil has a lighter exhaust. If the coal leaves behind solid residues, which then fall or dump into large heaps, and clean the machines themselves. That gasoline, when burned, gives out volatile components.
