Why the era of the Crusades coincides with the era of the might of papal power in Western Europe.

In the 11th century, papal power spread throughout Western Europe and had a huge impact. It was Pope Urban II who called Christians to the First Crusade. At first, it was conceived as providing assistance to Eastern Christians in the struggle against the nomadic tribes of the Seljuk Turks. Only from the Second Crusade the main goal was to recapture the city of Jerusalem, sacred to Christians, from the Muslims. This idea gained great popularity among the Catholics of Western Europe, and further crusades were organized by the rulers of these countries.
