Why was the Portuguese king not interested in Columbus’s proposal to find a western route to India?

Christopher Columbus, long before his discovery of the “erroneous” arrival in India, hatched a plan to get to Asia by sailing westward. He voiced his project both to the government of Genoa and to the King of Portugal, João II. And if the Genoese immediately rejected his offer, then the Portuguese ruler pondered Christopher’s plan for a long time.
