Why was there a statue of a she-wolf in the center of Rome?

The she-wolf statue is a symbol associated with the legend of Romulus and Remus and the founding of Rome. Ancient texts have preserved the memory of two sculptural groups that represented a she-wolf and twins in Rome. These two works have not survived. The third group of she-wolf with twins was in the Capitol and was destroyed along with other statues during a violent storm in 65 BC. It was this sculptural group that was usually identified with the statue of a she-wolf, which is now kept in the Capitol Museum.
