| 12 g of magnesium was treated with a sulfuric acid solution. Find the amount of H2So4 that reacted with magnesium and the amount of gas released.
The reaction equation looks like this:
Mg + H2SO4 = MgSO4 + H2
It shows that equimolar amounts of substances enter and are released during the reaction.
The molar mass M of magnesium is 24 g, which means that it interacted with acid 12/24 = 0.5 mol of metal. Correspondingly, the same amount of H2SO4 moles reacted. Since its M = 98, the mass is equal to:
98 * 0.5 = 49 g.
Let’s calculate the volume of hydrogen produced:
22.4 * 0.5 = 11.2 liters.
