The reason for the start of a series of wars that went down in history as the Hundred Years War were the claims of the English dynasty of Plantagenets for the rule of France. In earlier times, the British owned vast lands in Europe and wanted to return and hold them. Moreover, the ruling courts of England and France were often relatives and could lay claim to the throne. The war was started by the grandson of the French king, the English king Edward III.
