How did the Athenians prepare for war at sea?

Thimistocles became the initiator of the creation of the Athenian fleet. He managed to convince his fellow citizens of the expediency of creating a fleet, as he believed that a combat fleet was more profitable than building fortress walls. All proceeds from the mines were used for the construction of the triremes in the harbor of Perey. Two hundred warships were built, representing a formidable force for the enemies of Athens.
