Calculate the volume of hydrogen obtained by reacting 9.6 g of magnesium with 600 g of a 9.125% hydrochloric acid solution.

| Magnesium dissolves in hydrochloric acid solution. The reaction is described by the following chemical equation:
Mg + 2HCl = MgCl2 + H2 ↑;
Let’s calculate the molar amount of magnesium substance.
To do this, we divide its mass by the weight of 1 mole of metallic magnesium.
M Mg = 24 grams / mol;
N Mg = 9.6 / 24 = 0.4 mol;
An equivalent amount of hydrogen gas will be obtained.
Let’s determine the volume of hydrogen.
For this purpose, we multiply the amount of substance by the volume of 1 mole of gas (filling volume 22.4 liters).
V H2 = 0.4 x 22.4 = 8.96 liters;
Let’s find the amount of hydrochloric acid.
M HCl = 1 + 35.5 = 36.5 grams / mol;
N HCl = 600 x 0.09125 / 36.5 = 1.5 mol;
Therefore, the acid is taken in excess.
