Calculate the volume of ammonia that can be obtained by heating 30 g of ammonium chloride with an excess of calcium hydroxide, assuming that the volume fraction of the ammonia yield is 0.92.
This reaction proceeds according to the following chemical reaction equation:
2NH4Cl + Ca (OH) 2 = 2NH3 + CaCl2; + 2H2O;
Find the chemical amount of ammonium chloride. To do this, we divide its weight by its molar mass.
M NH4Cl = 14 + 4 + 35.5 = 53.5 grams / mol;
The amount of ammonium chloride will be:
N NH4 Cl = 30 / 53.5 = 0.561 mol;
Taking into account the reaction yield of 92% from this amount of salt, it is possible to obtain 0.561 x 0.92 = 0.516 mol of ammonia.
Let’s define its volume.
For this purpose, we multiply the amount of substance by the standard volume of 1 mole of gas (filling 22.40 liters)
V NH3 = 0.516 x 22.4 = 11.56 liters;
