A ball weighing 100 grams moves at a speed of 5 m / s after hitting a wall, it moves in the opposite direction at a speed of 4 m / s. What is the change in momentum of the ball as a result of hitting the wall.
m = 100 grams = 0.1 kilograms – the mass of the ball;
v1 = 5 m / s – the speed of the ball before hitting the wall;
v2 = 4 m / s – the speed of the ball after hitting the wall.
It is required to find the change in momentum of the ball.
Impulse of the ball before hitting the wall:
P1 = m * v1 = 0.1 * 5 = 0.5 kg * m / s;
Ball impulse after hitting a wall:
P2 = m * -v2 = 0.1 * -4 = -0.4 kg * m / s – the minus sign is taken because after hitting the wall the ball moves in the opposite direction.
P2 – P1 = -0.4 – 0.5 = -0.9 kg * m / s.
Answer: the change in momentum is -0.9 kg * m / s.
