A cyclist and a motorcyclist left the same city in opposite directions at the same time. After some time, the cyclist covered 42 km, and the motorcyclist – 89 km more. Find the distance between them at this moment.

Our task will be solved in just two steps.
Since the distance traveled by our cyclist is known, but the distance of the motorcyclist is not known, it means that the first thing to do is to find out exactly it. Since, according to the condition, it is said how many kilometers he traveled more than the cyclist, therefore, it will not be difficult for us to find out his distance.
1) 42 + 89 = 131 – a kilometer was covered by a motorcyclist.
Now add the distance between the rider and the cyclist and find out the distance between them.
2) 131 + 42 = 173 – kilometers.
