A square with a side of 12cm and a rectangle, one of the sides of which is even 8cm, have the same perimeter. Find the unknown side of the rectangle.

The perimeter of a square is found by the formula:

P = 4a.

The square has a side equal to 12 cm. So its perimeter will be equal to:

P = 4 * 12 = 48 cm.

The perimeter of the rectangle is found by the formula:

P = 2a + 2b.

The perimeter of the rectangle is equal to the perimeter of the square, and one side of it is 8 cm.So the second side is equal to:

P = 48 = 2a + 2 * 8.

48 = 2a + 16.

2a = 48 – 16.

2a = 32.

a = 16 cm – the second side of the rectangle.
