In rectangle ABCD, segment AC is the diagonal.

Consider triangle ACD.

In it, the angle D is straight, the leg CD = 8 cm, and the hypotenuse AC = 10 cm.

By the Pythagorean theorem, we find the second leg DA:

10 ^ 2 – 8 ^ 2 = 36.

So DA = √36 = 6 cm.

Then the area of the rectangle is 6 * 8 = 48 cm2
