According to the rule of the ecological pyramid, determine how much forest area is needed to feed a wolf weighing 50 kg (60% of the indicated mass is water), which is part of the food chain: plants – hare – fox – wolf. Bioproductivity of terrestrial vegetation is 200 g / m2.
The principle of the ecological pyramid – the indicator of each subsequent level of the ecological pyramid is about 10 times less than the previous one.
The dry weight of the wolf will be: 50 * (100 – 60) = 20 kg.
Let’s calculate the chain:
to feed the wolf you need 20 * 10 = 200 kg of foxes;
to feed the foxes you need 200 * 10 = 2000 kg of hares;
to feed hares you need 2000 * 10 = 20,000 kg of grass.
20,000 kg = 20,000,000 g.
Taking into account the bioproductivity of vegetation, the required area: 20,000,000 / 200 = 100,000 sq. m. or 10 hectares.
