Alkenes have a relative density for hydrogen of 56. Determine the number of carbon

Alkenes have a relative density for hydrogen of 56. Determine the number of carbon atoms that are contained in one molecule of this hydrocarbon.

Alkenes have the general formula: CnH2n.

1. Let’s calculate the molecular weight of the alkene by the formula (D (H2) – relative density by hydrogen):

M (CnH2n) = D (H2) * M (H2) = 56 * 2 = 112

2. Determine the alkene formula:

M (СnH2n) = 12 * n + 2 * n = 14n

14n = 112

n = 8

The alkene formula is C8H16. It’s octen.
