| Ammonia (68 g) was passed through a sulfuric acid solution. The mass fraction of the product yield of ammonium sulfate is 90%. Calculate the mass of the obtained ammonium sulfate.
Ammonia reacts with sulfuric acid. This synthesizes the ammonium sulfate salt.
This reaction proceeds according to the following chemical reaction equation:
2NH3 + H2SO4 = (NH4) 2SO4;
Let’s find the chemical amount of ammonia. To do this, we divide its volume by molar mass.
N NH3 = 68/17 = 4 mol;
With this amount of ammonia, 4/2 = 2 mol of sulfuric acid will react.
The same amount of ammonium sulfate will be obtained.
Let’s determine its weight.
M (NH4) 2SO4 = (14 + 4) x 2 + 32 + 16 x 4 = 132 grams / mol;
m (NH4) 2SO4 = 2 x 132 = 264 grams;
