An electric locomotive passed by the railway booth at a speed of 70 km / h. In 15 minutes a Volga car passed along the highway parallel to the railway at a speed of 90 km / h. How long will it take for the Volga to catch up with the electric locomotive?

In fifteen minutes, an electric locomotive with a speed of 70 km / h will cover 17.5 km (15 minutes – 1/4 hour – 70 km / h * 1/4 hour = 17.5 km).

The moment the car catches up with the train, their separate paths will become equal.

Let’s compose the equation of the path, in one part of which there will be the path of the electric locomotive until the moment when the “Volga” catches up with it, in the other – the path of the car to the “meeting”.

The unknown time – t – in the equation will be our desired value.

We get: 17.5 km + 70 km / h * t = 90 km / h * t. – 17.5 km = 20 km / h * t. – t = 17.5 / 20 = 0.875 hours or 52.5 minutes. After such a time, the Volga will catch up with the electric locomotive.
