An excess of sodium hydroxide solution was added to a solution containing 1.6 g of copper
An excess of sodium hydroxide solution was added to a solution containing 1.6 g of copper (II) sulfate. Determine the mass of the precipitated sediment.
CuSO4 + 2NaOH = Cu (OH) 2 + Na2SO4.
Cu (OH) 2- sediment.
1) Find the molar mass of copper sulfate: 64 + 32 + 4 * 16 = 160.
2) Find the amount of copper sulfate substance. To do this, divide the mass of sulfate by its molar mass: 1.6 / 160 = 0.01 mol.
3) According to the reaction equation, there is one mole of copper hydroxide for one mole of copper sulfate. This means that the amount of copper hydroxide substance is 0.01 mol.
4) The molar mass of copper hydroxide is: 64 + 2 (16 + 1) = 64 + 34 = 98.
5) Find the mass of copper hydroxide. To do this, multiply its molar mass by the amount of substance: 0.01 * 98 = 0.98 g – the answer.
