Are magnesium and silicon metals?

Magnesium is the lightest of all metallic elements and is primarily used in structural alloys due to its light weight, strength and corrosion resistance. More than 60 different minerals are known to exist with 20% or more magnesium, making it the eighth most abundant element in the earth’s crust.
Silicon is neither a metal nor a non-metal; it is a metalloid, an element that sits somewhere in between. Metalloids usually have the properties of both metals and non-metals.
